INDONESIAN EGG FARMS
2020-04-01
Sinergia Animal conducted the first media exposé of the egg industry in Indonesia. Images captured from 13 different farms showed hens living in cramped and dirty battery cages. Some facilities used metal cages, while smaller ones used bamboo enclosures. Around 88% of egg production in Indonesia is produced in this type of system, in which each cage can have up to 12 hens. Shockingly, investigators found that some hens developed an illness called infectious coryza, which made many of them lose their sight.
